German Chancellor Angela Merkel has arrived in Spain for talks with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. They will be trying to thrash out differences on how to get Spain out of its economic crisis.
Spain has already been offered assistance of up to 100 billion euros to prop up its financial sector. But even that may not be enough and Rajoy says the country may consider seeking extra aid.
He said he wanted to see details of the European Central Bank’s program before deciding whether to proceed with a new request. ECB President Mario Draghi has proposed a new bond-buying plan, but details have yet to be disclosed.
Manuel Garcia-Margallo, Spanish Foreign Minister, said, "Regarding the fiscal union I do share the same views as my German colleagues, there are two faces of the same coin. We need greater convergence of our budgets and a greater control from European authorities over the budgets of countries that are part of the euro zone. By achieving this convergence and securing these controls, we can achieve the mutualization of the debt."
